Dianna Duran and the Great Stall
November 3, 2012
Dianna Duran is New Mexico's Secretary of State. She is the first Republican to hold the position in over 80 years.
Duran's term in office has the potential to be one of the most politically partisan in history.
First there was the national embarrassment of her claims of widespread voter fraud. She forced onto the New Mexico State Police a massive investigation into her claims. Claims that were found not to be true.
She was just being a good soldier in the Republican's war on voters.
Republicans have been claiming voter registration fraud in New Mexico for years. Pat Rogers, Darren White, Heather Wilson and Pete Domenici together forced US Attorney David Iglesias out of office because he refused to pursue these nonexistent cases of fraud.
In an interesting twist...Republican groups in several states are now in hot water for actual voter registration fraud.
Chief among these groups are those led by Nathan Sproul. Jay McCleskey's old partner at Lincoln Strategies Group. Duran paid Lincoln Strategies Group $100,000 to help get her elected in 2010.
First in Florida, now in Virginia, Sproul is under criminal investigation for his actions.
McCleskey and Sproul are two peas in a pod.
McCleskey has crossed about every line there is this election cycle including coordinating between his super PAC Reform New Mexico Now, Susana PAC and campaigns including David Chavez, John Ryan, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for his super PAC long before registering it and failing to include mandatory disclosures on mailers.
Duran is in charge of enforcement against such actions. But Duran has gone AWOL perhaps to allow McCleskey to impact as many elections despite the fact his actions may well be illegal.
Yesterday, ISPAC received a response from Duran's office to an IPRA regarding complaints against McCleskey. As of yesterday, McCleskey still had not provided evidence regarding his two largest early contributions to his super PAC to prove that he did not break the law by registering his group within ten days of exceeding $500.
McCleskey filed an amended report to change the date of the receipt of the contributions to show they had complied with the law. But has yet to provide evidence that is true.
Duran; however, has seen fit to give McCleskey all of the time in the world. She received complaints from six people about this possible violation in June 2012.
Yet to date, Duran has taken no action against him despite his failure to provide simple evidence.
It appears Duran has decided enforcement can wait if her stall helps McCleskey get Republicans elected.
